One insight about communication that I gained is that "language is used as an instrument of control, to exert influence over others and our environment" (O'Hair, Wiemann, Mullin, Teven, 2015, p. 69). Whether the language is welcomed or aggressive, the communication style has a great influence over those who are on the receiving end of the communication. The other insight that I gained is that language can be biased, even if the intentions are good. Calling people anything other than their name (especially depending on the relationship) can be offensive or welcomed.

Alvia,
ReplyDeleteWhat great reflections you had this week from our assignments. I too found that maybe my results were skewed when considering feedback from colleagues. We are much more aware of our communication skills and efforts in work settings I believe. The insight that all language influences others is an important one to remember. Whether it is intentional or not, all language influences interactions. Thanks for sharing!

Alvia,
ReplyDeleteIts funny how we listen and communicate to people in our personal lives different then the people that we work with. Surprisingly, my assessment came back the same from both people I had complete it. They were off by 1 point. I let my best friend and a colleague complete the inventories, apparently I am the same at work and in my personal life.
In reference to the language insight I agree. At work they call me the petty one and I try not to be. But, I will not communicate with you if you don't address me by my name. I think it is very disrespectful. Thanks for the insight this week.
